MACUL Award Nominations

MACUL Awards Information and Guidelines for 2020

We are excited to release the information and guidelines for the 2020 Award Nominations. We hope that these procedures will encourage more people to nominate themselves or others for:

  • Innovative Teacher– (must be a certified PK-12 classroom teacher)
  • Innovative Leader – (must be a non-classroom educator, such as an ISD employee, technology or curriculum staff in a district, tech integration coaches, etc.)
  • Innovative District –(must be a district within the realm of PK-12)

All nominations are due by Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 5:00 PM EST.

Each nomination will be submitted via the online nomination form found at https://forms.gle/vD1MdHqD9yubbfY8A

That form has three key components:

  • Information for the individual or student/student group 
  • Information for the person nominating the individual or group
  • A link to the web based digital portfolio containing the specified artifacts below. The link for the portfolio is submitted via the online form.

The purpose of the portfolio is to collect in a digital format what the nominee has already done to earn this award. This format will allow for creative ways to “promote” the candidate. There are specific items required, but within those are a lot of possibilities.

You may nominate yourself or someone else.  Please note that if you nominate someone else, you will need to work with that person to create the digital portfolio. It would be difficult (not impossible) to keep the nomination a secret.

Portfolio Guidelines

All portfolios must be created as a Google Site.

  • This is not meant to be a web design contest. It is meant to be a place where the information for the nominee(s) is collected and accessed. A Google Site has very basic capabilities and can be created from a personal Gmail account or for Google using schools, from a school account
  • Google Sites are free
  • You are welcome to use embedded content as appropriate
  • Google Sites are very easy to create.  Learn more from: Getting Started with Google Sites – from Google Learning Center
  • IMPORTANT: your Google Site must be set to allow public access. You will find that in the Sharing settings.

What must be included for each Award:

Innovative Teacher Award:

A PK-12 classroom teacher that effectively uses and integrates technology to support teaching and learning in the classroom. It should include the following: 

    • Home
      • Name
      • Brief Statement about why the nominee deserves the award. (200 to 300 word limit. Go in more detail on other bulleted items)
    • Resume
      • Please be sure it includes nominee’s current work assignment
    • Letters of Support
      • Link(s) to letters from an administrator (Principal, Curriculum Coordinator, Superintendent, etc.) that addresses nominee’s impact on teaching and learning.
      • Links to additional letter(s) of support from a co-worker, parent, student, administrator, etc.
    • Artifacts
      • 2 artifacts that demonstrate how technology is used to enhance the teaching and learning in nominee’s classroom. These artifacts may be videos, images, websites, descriptions, examples of work, narratives, video narratives or any combination of those.  Remember, these artifacts are meant to show examples of how the nominee uses technology.
  • Responses
    These should be text based, but may have links, images, etc. to help enhance each response
    • Describe how the nominee develops and facilitates authentic learning opportunities for learners. (250 word limit)
    • Describe how the nominee evaluates the effectiveness of technology in the learning process. (250 word limit.)
    • What methods or resources does the nominee use to continuously improve  professional practice? What impact does this have on the classroom/school? (250 word limit)

Innovative Leader Award:

An individual who leads outside of the classroom and supports effective use of technology for teaching and learning. It should include the following: 

    • Home
      • Name
      • Brief Statement about why the nominee deserves the award. (200 to 300 word limit. Go in more detail on other bulleted items)
    • Resume
      • Please be sure it includes nominee’s current work assignment
    • Letters of Support
      • Link(s) to letters from an administrator (Principal, Curriculum Coordinator, Superintendent, etc.) that addresses nominee’s impact on teaching and learning.
      • Links to additional letter(s) of support from a co-worker, parent, student, administrator, etc.
    • Artifacts
      • 2 artifacts that demonstrate how technology is used to enhance the teaching and learning in nominee’s classroom. These artifacts may be videos, images, websites, descriptions, examples of work, narratives, video narratives or any combination of those.  Remember, these artifacts are meant to show examples of how the nominee uses technology.
  • Responses
    These should be text based, but may have links, images, etc. to help enhance each response
    • What methods or resources does the nominee use to continuously support the integration of technology within the organization? (250 word limit)
    • How does the nominee evaluate the needs of the staff that the nominee supports? (250 word limit)
    • What resources, tools, or processes does the nominee use to create meaningful learning opportunities for staff and learners that the nominee supports? (250 word limit)

Innovative District Award (school district within the realm of K-12)

A district who models the use of technology to support learning within the school or greater community.  (A district 

The portfolio should  include the following:

  • Home 
    • General description of the district
    • Brief Statement about why the district deserves the award. (200 to 300 word limit. Go in more detail on other bulleted items)
  • Letter(s)  of Support
    • Letter of support from a student, administrator, teacher, community member etc who is aware of the impact the individual or student group.
  • Artifacts
    • 1-2 artifacts that demonstrate how technology is used to enhance the learning process for those involved in the school district. These artifacts may be videos, images, descriptions, written or video narratives, examples of work or any combination of those. Remember, these artifacts are painting a picture or making a case for why the nominated district deserves this award. 
  • Responses
    These should be text based, but may have links, images, etc. to help enhance each response
    • What did the district do or use to merit recognition?
    • How was this project/idea lead and supported by the district.
    • How has the incorporation of technology affected students, staff, and/or community members  (250 word limit)

This is one example for setting up the Google Site. You are free to organize the site as you see fit, but, make sure that all elements are listed and easy to find within the Site.

IMPORTANT: Google Site must be submitted as PUBLIC (Publish → Publish Settings → Anyone on the Web). 

* If you have applied in the past and not won the award, you are welcome to resubmit. Please make sure that the Site is up to date and all of the links work.
