Conference Alternative Funding

MACUL offers the following possible ways to fund your MACUL conference participation. All of these options may not be available to you and your school or district.

1. MEEMIC and Edutek Midwest Scholarship Offer (Contest closed).

Two MACUL conference sponsors, MEEMIC Insurance and Edutek Midwest have announced the funding of a limited number of full conference registrations (value $180 each). 7 full-conference scholarships ($180 value each) will be drawn from eligible entries on November 23. Winners will be announced on the MACUL website on December. Deadline to enter: November 20, 2009 (Contest closed)

Note: Scholarships will be chosen at random from eligible entries. If winners are unable to attend the MACUL conference for any reason, they must inform MACUL by March 1, 2010. Only one entry per person and this offer is non-transferable. MACUL Board and Special Interest Group officers are not eligible to win.

2.  MEA Discount Offer 

The Michigan Education Association has announced a $50 discount to the first 50 MEA members to register for the 2010 MACUL conference beginning today. To receive this discount, register for the 2010 MACUL conference online. This is the ONLY method to register for the conference to receive this discount. Please select Full Conference and at the checkout apply the coupon code: meamacul.

 3. Use Federal Title II, Part A & D funds.

Check with your administration about eligibility to use No Child Left Behind funds. Specifically, Title II, Part A - Preparing, Training and Recruiting High Quality Teachers and Principals money is to be spent on professional development. Title II, Part D is dedicated for Enhancing Education Through Technology, 25% of which must be spent for technology staff development. Also, review your district’s ability to use Title V funds for innovative education.

4. Request funding from your local educational foundation or parent/teacher organization.

Download the sample letter  as a model for your request. This letter can be edited and adapted by you to add your own rationale for attending the MACUL conference. Your educational foundation may be willing to fund your conference attendance if you explain how certain sessions at the conference will help you gain a better understanding of a new teaching method or curriculum application. You may choose to consider editing the letter to request a specified funding amount.

5. Request funding from local businesses and corporations that have an interest in educational technology.

6.  Participate in the MI-Champions program.

Program participants will receive funding for conference registration, lodging and substitutes. The program develops the expertise of teachers to use technology to improve student academic achievement. The purpose of the program is to design and deliver a statewide model for professional development that will create the skill set necessary for building based “Technology Integration Champions” at the local level. 7. Bring a team of students for the Student Technology Showcase.

Teachers who bring a team of students to participate in the Student Technology Showcase receive a reduced conference registration rate.  The event will be held on March 11, 2010 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids.  Two teachers from each team participating in the Showcase are eligible to register for the conference at the student rate ($75 by early registration deadline).  Team registration information will be available soon.

8. Recruit a new conference sponsor, receive free registration.

A complimentary registration to the 2010 MACUL conference will be given for recruiting and signing a new conference sponsor.  Limit one complimentary registration per new sponsor.  For more details, contact Ric Wiltse, MACUL Executive Director at rwiltse@macul.org or call 517-882.1403.

9. District Discount

Groups of 10 or more teachers from the same district on the same check or credit card qualify for a group discount. There is no group discount for on-site or online registration. Purchase orders are not accepted. This offer applies only for the full conference registration. Information available soon.

 10. Present at the conference.

Although it is too late for this year, consider presenting at the 2011 MACUL Confernece held in Detroit on March 17 & 18. Primary presenters for the MACUL conference are given a complimentary conference registration. While co-presenters do not receive this benefit, some presentation teams divide the total cost of registration. Note: this benefit is dependant on being accepted as a speaker for the 2011 conference. Proposals can be submitted from July through September 2010.

11. Write a MACUL grant. Deadline: June 2010

Although it is too late for this year, consider submitting a MACUL grant proposal by next June and make a presentation about your project at the 2011 MACUL conference. MACUL grant winners receive a complimentary conference registration. Read more information about MACUL grants on the MACUL website.

Consider these ways of cutting costs, such as carpooling to the conference or sharing a hotel room. Use the MACUL listserv to post your interest in carpooling or to seek a roommate. Information on subscribing to the macul-serv listserv can be found in every issue of the MACUL Journal.
